This evergreen species has a distinctive expanded caudex, used for water storage, and can grow up to 15 feet 6 inches (4.72 m). Its palm-like stem produces tufts of strap-shaped, leathery leaves that curve back, sometimes resembling locks of hair on the ends. At about 10 years old, it may produce panicles of small white flowers.
